7 Nights / 8 Days
The Lemosho Route is one of the least crowded and most scenic pathways to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This route is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and the unique chance to see the mountain from different angles as you ascend. The 8-day itinerary allows for excellent acclimatization, significantly enhancing your chance of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Climbers on the Lemosho Route enjoy stunning views, varied terrain, and the tranquillity of the wilderness.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. In the evening, meet your climbing team for a briefing and finalize any necessary gear arrangements.
After breakfast, depart for Lemosho Gate (2,100 m). After completing park formalities, start your trek through the lush rainforest, home to various wildlife and birds. This trek covers around 6–7 kilometres (4–5 miles) and takes approximately 3-4 hours. You'll set up camp at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp (2,750 m), enjoy dinner, and spend the night under the stars.
Begin your trek after breakfast, ascending to Shira Camp (3,840 m). This day covers approximately 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) and takes about 4-5 hours. The trail leads you through delightful heath and moorland, with stunning views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo Peak. After setting up camp, explore the surroundings and enjoy your evening meal.
This day is dedicated to acclimatisation. You will hike from Shira Camp to Lava Tower (4,600 m), covering about 7 kilometres (4.3 miles). After reaching Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m) for the night, covering another 8 kilometres (5 miles). The total trekking time for the day is usually around 7-8 hours. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy helps your body acclimatise effectively.
After breakfast, tackle the Barranco Wall, a steep and exciting climb offering amazing views of the valley below. Once at the top, continue to Karanga Camp (4,030 m), about 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) away. The ascent today takes approximately 4-5 hours. After reaching camp, enjoy your evening meal and relax.
Today, you will trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673 m). This leg of the journey covers approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) and takes about 3-4 hours. The trek takes you through increasingly barren terrain, with stunning views of the surrounding valleys and Kibo Peak's summit. You will arrive at Barafu Camp in the early afternoon, allowing time to rest before your summit attempt. Enjoy an early dinner and get some rest.
Wake up around midnight and prepare for your summit attempt. The journey to Uhuru Peak takes approximately 6-8 hours. You'll ascend through the dark, heading towards Stella Point (5,756 m) before continuing on to Uhuru Peak—the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro! After taking in the magical sunrise and capturing photos, begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest. Later, continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100 m), where you will spend the night. This descent takes about 8 hours. Celebrate your incredible achievement with dinner around the campfire.
On your final day, you will descend from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,800 m). This trek takes about 3-4 hours, and you'll enjoy the lush rainforest and the beautiful sounds of nature on your way down. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you will receive your summit certificates and have a final celebration with your team. Afterward, return to Moshi for a well-earned rest and celebration dinner.
