The Marangu Route, commonly known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and one of the most established routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route where climbers sleep in mountain huts rather than tents, making it a comfortable option for trekkers who prefer hut accommodation.
The route approaches the mountain from the southeast and offers gradual slopes and beautiful scenery through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert zones before reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

After registration at Marangu Gate the trek begins through a dense rainforest filled with towering trees and unique birdlife. Monkeys are frequently seen along the trail.
Arrival at Mandara Hut where climbers enjoy dinner and overnight.

Hiking time: 6–7 hours
The trail gradually climbs through moorland landscapes with beautiful views of Mawenzi Peak.
Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

A rest and acclimatization day to help the body adjust to altitude. Optional short hikes can be taken around the area.

Altitude: 3,720 m to 4,700 m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
The trek continues through the alpine desert zone toward Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt.
Early dinner and rest before summit night.

Distance: 22 km
Hiking time: 10–14 hours
Summit climb begins at midnight. Climbers reach Gilman’s Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After reaching the summit descend to Horombo Hut.

Descend through rainforest to Marangu Gate where climbers receive summit certificates.
Transfer to Moshi or Arusha.
