The Lahaul and Spiti district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh consists of the two formerly separate districts of Lahaul and Spiti. The present administrative centre is Keylong in Lahaul. Before the two districts were merged, Kardang was the capital of Lahaul, and Dhankar the capital of Spiti.

The district was formed in 1960, and is the fourth least populous district in India. Kunzum la or the Kunzum Pass is the entrance pass to the Spiti Valley from Lahaul. It is 21 km from Chandra Tal. This district is connected to Manali through the Rohtang Pass. To the south, Spiti ends 24 km from Tabo, at the Sumdo where the road enters Kinnaur and joins with National Highway No. 5. The two valleys are quite different in character. Spiti is more barren and difficult to cross, with an average elevation of the valley floor of 4,270 m. It is enclosed between lofty ranges, with the Spiti river rushing out of a gorge in the southeast to meet the Sutlej River

Arrival - Manali

Manu Temple Hadimba Temple

Welcome to Himachal Pradesh : On arrival you are met & welcomed by our executive and transferred to the hotel in your private car. Take some rest and have your lunch. Later in afternoon you go for a half day city tour of Manali covering Hadimba temple, Manu temple and Tibetan Monastery. Overnight at hotel

Day 2

Manali - Keylong (115 kms/ 6 hrs)

Rohtang Pass

Headquarters of Lahaul & Spiti district : In the morning after breakfast at hotel you travel by surface to Keylong over Rohtang Pass (3980 m). Enroute you will be crossing Rahala water Fall, Marhi and some Lahaul villages like Khoksar, Sissu and Gondla. On arrival check in at hotel. Afternoon visit to Khardong monastery & village. Evening free to explore Keylong. Overnight at hotel

Day 3

Keylong

Raw natural beauty: Today you go for an excursion visiting Trilokinath and Mrikula Devi temple at Udaipur in Pattan valley. Overnight at hotel

Keylong - Kaza (200 kms / 10 -11 hrs)

Countryside life: After breakfast travel by jeep from Keylong to Kaza over the Kunzam Pass (4558 m) enroute visiting villages like Losar, Hal and Rangrik. On arrival check in at hotel or guest house. Overnight at guest house

Day 5

Kaza

Day for monasteries : Morning visit the Ki monastery, 12 kms from Kaza. This centuries – old gompa is a labyrinth of rooms and corridors – and at one time also acted as a fort. It houses valuable Thangkas and offers a panoramic view of the area. Also visit the small gompa at Kibber, 9 kms further ahead. Kibber at 4205 m altitude has the distinction of being one of the highest permanently inhabited village of the region. Overnight in tents at Kaza

Day 6

Kaza - Tabo

The Ajanta of the Himalayas : After breakfast leave for an excursion to Tabo visiting Tabo Monastery. Founded in 996 AD by the great teacher Richensang-po, Tabo is known for its awesome murals and stucco images – and is thus called “The Ajanta of the Himalayas”. abo monastery is the largest monastic complex in Spiti embracing in its complex 9 temples, 23 chortens besides chambers for monks and nuns. There are several caves adorned with frescoes and contemporary structures too. In trans Himalayan Buddhism, Tabo’s sanctity is next only to Tibet’s Tholing gompa. Later drive back to Kaza enroute visiting Dhankar Monastery. Overnight at hotel in Kaza

Kaza - Manali

Contrasting Landscapes : Travel back to Manali. On arrival check in at the hotel for an overnight stay.
