Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route five day itinerary starting and ending at Marangu Gate with mountain hut accommodation at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo. The route covers tropical rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, and a summit attempt to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. Daily walking distances and times are provided, with summit night starting around midnight and a long descent afterwards. Price noted includes park fees, huts, guides, porters and meals.
Drive from Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate where you register and receive a briefing at the Kilimanjaro National Park office. The trek proceeds through tropical rainforest for approximately 8 km taking about 4 to 6 hours, finishing at Mandara Hut at 2,700m where you overnight.
Hike from Mandara Hut through the heath and moorland zone with first views of Mawenzi Peak. The day covers about 12 km and takes approximately 5 to 7 hours, ending at Horombo Hut at 3,720m where you overnight.
Trek from Horombo Hut across the alpine desert saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo into a cold and dry environment. The route is approximately 10 km, taking around 6 to 8 hours, arriving at Kibo Hut at 4,703m. Rest and preparation for the summit attempt take place at Kibo Hut.
Summit day starts around midnight from Kibo Hut with the ascent to Gilmans Point at 5,685m and continuation to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m, followed by descent back to Horombo Hut. The full day can take a total of 12 to 15 hours and is the most challenging day of the trek.
Descend from Horombo Hut through Mandara forest, exit Kilimanjaro National Park and trek for approximately 5 to 7 hours to Marangu Gate. After exiting the park you drive back to Moshi or Arusha to conclude the itinerary.
