The gold mining boom that followed and the desire to control the wealth it generated led to major tension between foreigners (led by the British and their expansionist policies) and the local South Africans backed by the Dutch settlers, resulting in the civil war that was finally resolved with British victory and a unified South Africa in 1910. Large scale diamond and gold mining remains the backbone of the city' s economy on account of its proximity to the mineral rich hills of Witwatersrand. For tourists, the city offers a range of things to do and see. There are museums, galleries for the ones who gear more towards an artsy lifestyle, there are various parks and gardens, a myriad of restaurants and bars so that you can get a taste of South African cuisine in all its glory.
