Day 1 : Arrival
AFN Travel employees will meet you at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport. Welcome to Baku! Then they will take you to your cozy hotel rooms, where you will have enough time for rest after the flight.
Baku Sightseeing
We will start with Mountain Park in the hills. You can enjoy a wonderful view of the capital there; the Bay of Baku is especially picturesque from this height. Among other places in the park, Martyrs’ Lane is a must-visit.
The next point in the tour is National Flag Square. It’s a grand spectacle, an extraordinarily impressing work of modern architecture. No doubt, you have never seen flagpoles this high!
Another modern symbol of our capital is the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center. There are no 90 degree angles in this building at all! This was the idea of the famous design architect Zaha Hadid.
Baku Boulevard is a favorite walking place for Baku residents as well as for visitors. We will also have a walk in this delightful place. Our guide will show the most remarkable attractions in this part of the capital, such as the International Center of Mugham, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, etc.
Now it’s time to move from modern Baku to the innermost streets of the Old City dating back centuries. This is an absolutely fabulous place, which was often used for decorations in the Soviet film production, and not without reason: even today you can feel like a movie character here.
The Palace of the Shirvanshahs is a majestic structure, which was being constructed almost for three hundred years: from the XIII to the XVI centuries. Our guide will tell you the story of how and due to what reasons this dynasty decided to make Baku their capital.
The functioning Juma Mosque with its centuries-long history; the Double Gates producing deep impression on all architecture connoisseurs; the Maiden Tower with its many legends and stories; the Market Square with its memory of merchants from all over the world; Caravanserai representing a striking combination of elegance and simplicity – these are only some of the sites we are going to show you during this walking tour.
Free Time
After the sightseeing, you can stay and have a walk around the old paved streets, drop by at one of the numerous cafes, feel the spirit of this ancient place, which is still full of the positive energy. Or you can go back to a ‘younger’ part of the capital, where people already start preparations for a typical megalopolis night out.
Day 2 : Trip to Gobustan
Immediately after breakfast, we will get on comfortable buses and head towards the mountains. We will make the first stop 65 km away from the capital. Those who take even the slightest interest in anthropology and ancient civilizations, have surely heard of Gobustan. The rock carvings discovered here were made by people who lived back in the Paleolithic era.
Oil was found in Gobustan long time ago. Here, we will show you how people produced ‘black gold’ in the old days and you will have an opportunity to compare old methods to modern high technology on the oil producing platforms in the Caspian Sea.
Since we’ve made a stop in Gobustan, we will undoubtedly drop by Dashgil to explore the famous mud volcanoes – by the way, our country is the world’s leader by the number of such volcanoes. It’s a fantastic spectacle! Another place of interest for us is an ancient pagan sanctuary Pir Gara-Atli nearby Kichikdash Mountain.
Absheron Tour
The second part of the program for the day is devoted to the Absheron Peninsula located very close to the capital. Thanks to the natural magic of this peninsula, Azerbaijan has its second beautiful name – the Land of Fire. It’s all because of Yanar Dağ ever-burning flames. The whole slope is burning and neither words, nor photos, nor videos can show this phenomenon in all its greatness. It will rock you to your very core when you see it with your own eyes.
Undoubtedly, even a child could guess that this spectacle exists due to natural gas seeping out from under the ground. But our ancestors weren’t up to physics and chemistry – they deified this wonderful place. This is how a fire cult appeared and its worshipers built the Ateshgah, the Temple of Eternal Fire. Of course, we will visit this unique place – even today, Zoroastrians come here from all over the world.
Finally, we will go to Qala – an open-air archaeological and ethnographic museum spread over a vast reserved area. Discovering buildings of different times, burial places and other ancient artifacts, you will plunge into distant history of our country.
