Shuttle through the southern Carpathian Mountains during a day tour of the Transfagarasan Highway. Accelerate along picturesque stretches of Romania's second-highest mountain pass, visiting sites of importance like Poenari Castle, a breathtaking bastion made famous by Vlad III the Impaler. Following convenient pickup from your Bucharest hotel, launch your once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Head north along the Transfagarasan Highway, constructed in the '70s to provide military transport across the mountains. Appreciate the byway that some refer to as "the best road in the world" en route to the Curtea de Arges Orthodox Monastery where you can marvel at the tombs of members of the Romanian royal family. From Curtea de Arges, meander around breathtaking twists and turns to arrive at Poenari Castle—a site to behold. Lace up your walking shoes and ascend 1,480 steps to enter the edifice and admire the 360-degree scenery. Learn about the structure's connection to Vlad III the Impaler, who is thought to have served as the real-world inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula.
