Fairs of Assam
Ambubasi Mela : Every year with the onset of the monsoon season, the Kamakhya temple graces this fair. Innumerous devotees from different parts of the country and overseas come to have a taste of the Tantrik rituals that are performed by the Tantriks who have made this place their abode since years on this occasion. The whole idea behind this fair is that it is related to the menstrual cycle of the goddess Kamakhya. The commencing days calls for the temple to be closed which opens on the fourth day with the ritualistic worshipping of the goddess. Fairs of Assam The zeal and the energy of the youth are reflected in the vivid fairs of the state too. The fairs bring about an occasion to rejoice for the people throughout the state. Multitudinous fairs are held across the state in different times of the year. Some of the major fairs held in the state are : Jonbeel Mela : The winter season witnesses this fair in the place called Jonbeel in Jagiroad. Various tribes such as the Khasi, the Tiwa, the Karbi and the Jaintia assemble in this fair to showcase their exclusive products. The sole living example of the Barter system, this fair holds the exchange of products between the different tribes and communities. Agni Puja and the collection of taxes by the Tiwa King followed by spectacular dances and melodious music mark the occasion. With all the people swinging in the joyful and the funfilled atmosphere, the fair spreads the message of mutual understanding as well as harmonious living.
