Languages of Assam

Bodo and Assamese have been widely considered as the state’s official languages. Originating from the Magahi Prakrit of the eastern region, the linguistically modern form of the Assamese language bears influences from ethnic Mon-Khmer and Tibeto-Burman languages.

The Bodo language traces its roots to the Tibeto-Burman language. The Barak valley dominantly uses the Bengali (Sylheti) language. However, Bengali and Nepali are the other two major languages that are used as the medium of expression.
