Costumes of Chhattisgarh
Chhattisgarh has various tribal groups living in the state. These groups have contributed to the vividness of the costumes worn by the people of Chhattisgarh. Fabrics like cotton, silk and linen in various colours are used to make clothes in this state. The craftsmen are bestowed with numerous fabric-making techniques that originally belong to Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh parent state.
Batik, tie-dye, and weaving are the techniques that are used for the purpose of fabric-making. Clothes are dyed by tying them up at different levels to attain a desired pattern. This technique of dying is called Bandhani. When the fabric is at first painted with liquified wax and is later dyed with cold dyes’ colours, the design so produced is called ‘Batik’. However, these techniques are not extensively practiced in the state.
In cities men wear trousers and shirts and women wear salwar and sarees. Sarees have varieties like Orissa silk, Batik print sarees, Maheshwari silk, Chanderi silk etc. The basic costumes worn here are similar to the one worn by the people all over India, without any characteristic specialties and features. It is only the tribal costumes that have some features and attracts tourists a lot. The tribal people here wear colorful costumes, pretty bright in colors. Men drape themselves in dhotis and wear cotton turbans to protect themselves from the harsh sun. Whereas, the women wear full length or knee length sarees that are particularly available in bright colors.
