Music in Chhattisgarh

The tribal groups, ever ready for a zestful celebration and nurtured by the hands of Mother Nature, exude a deep interest in music. The tribal groups have different folk songs in which they rejoice to the hilt whenever the occasion demands. Each folk song is coloured by their enthusiasm to live freely and close to the nature besides reflecting their simple-mindedness and amicable nature. There are many songs specific for different occasion such as the Sohar song which graces the occasions such as child-birth. Bihav songs pertain to marriages and are sung to bless the newly married couple. The folk songs such as the Goura songs, Janvara songs, Mata Seva songs, Dhankul songs, Bhojali songs and that for nag Panchami are highly devotional and mirror the people’s deep belief in the almighty. The Goura songs celebrate Lord Shiva and his other half Parvati.

Besides these, there are songs to celebrate the change of the seasons such as the Fag, the Sawnahi and the Baramasi. Many of the folk songs are sung on specific festivals such as the Cher-Chera which celebrates new crops or child birth, the Dohe which is sung in Rout Nacha and the Sua songs to celebrate the festival of Diwali.
