7 Nights / 8 Days
The Machame Route, also known as the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most scenic and popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This 7-day version offers a great balance between challenge and proper acclimatisation, giving climbers a high chance of reaching the summit. This 7-day version offers better acclimatisation than the shorter 6-day route, increasing your summit chances. It also provides incredible scenic variety—from rainforest to glaciers—and follows the "climb high, sleep low" method for a safer, more successful climb.
Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly welcomed by our Professional Driver Guide and Guest Relations Officer. We’ll assist you with your luggage and airport formalities before transferring you to your hotel in Arusha for Check-in and relaxation after your journey. Safari briefing by our team will follow.
The trek begins at Machame Gate (1,490m), where climbers enter the lush rainforest and hike for about 5 to 7 hours to reach Machame Camp (3,020m). The trail can be muddy and slippery, but it's a beautiful walk-through dense forest and rich greenery.
Today’s hike is shorter, around 4 to 6 hours, but steeper as the trail leaves the forest and climbs into open moorland. You’ll begin to feel the altitude as you reach Shira Camp (3,845m), where the views open up and the landscape becomes more rugged.
This is a long and important acclimatisation day. You’ll hike for about 6 to 8 hours, climbing up to Lava Tower (4,630m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,976m). The "climb high, sleep low" approach helps your body adjust to the altitude and boosts your chances of summit success.
One of the most memorable parts of the route, today starts with a steep climb up the famous Barranco Wall. After the scramble, the trail levels out as you head to Karanga Camp (3,995m). It’s a shorter hiking day, allowing time for rest and acclimatisation.
A steady uphill trek leads you to Barafu Camp (4,673m), your base camp before the summit. The hike takes 3 to 5 hours through a stark, alpine desert. Once at camp, you’ll eat and rest early in preparation for the midnight summit push.
This is the toughest and most rewarding day. Just after midnight, you’ll begin the slow, steady climb to Stella Point (5,756m), then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend all the way to Mweka Camp (3,080m) for the night. Total hiking time is around 12 to 16 hours.
The final stretch is a gentle 3 to 5-hour descent through the rainforest. At Mweka Gate (1,630m), you’ll receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to the mountain after an unforgettable journey.
