Shira Gate to Shira 1 Camp Elevation: 1200M to 1830M to 3500M Hiking Time: 4-5hours Hiking Distance: 10 Km Habitat: Montane forest to moorland and heath vegetation Your Kilimanjaro adventure commences at the Shira Gate, where you’ll complete park registrations. The trek quickly leads you into the alpine desert zone, setting a demanding pace. This day’s hike covers approximately 10 kilometres, and you’ll reach Shira 1 Camp, perched at an elevation of around 3,610 meters. The striking alpine landscape and the sense of solitude are immediate highlights.

Elevation: 3500m to 3800m Distance: 7km Hiking time: 5-6 hours Habitat: Moorland and rock. The trail continues through the alpine desert after you leave Shira 1 Camp. You will reach Shira 2 Camp, which is located at an elevation of roughly 3,850 meters, after traveling about 5 kilometers on this day. The backdrop is compelling due to the size of the Shira Plateau and the striking vistas of Kilimanjaro's volcanic rocks.

Ascending to Lava Tower, which is around 4,600 meters above sea level, can help you acclimate considerably. You will next descend to Barranco Camp, which is around 3,960 meters above sea level. The distance for the day is about 10 kilometers.

After overcoming this difficult wall, your journey takes you to Karanga Camp, which is tucked away at an elevation of about 4,035 meters. This day's hike, which covers roughly 6 kilometres, heightens the thrill of your trip.

Elevation: 3900m to 4620m Distance: 8 km Hiking time: 3-4 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert. You’ll make your way to the Barafu Camp, the last stop before the summit attempt. The campsite is situated at an elevation of approximately 4,600 meters. This day’s trek is around 4 kilometers and provides an opportunity for rest and preparation of the next day.

Elevation: 4620m to 5895m to 3100m Distance: 15km Hiking time: 10 to 12 hours Habitat: Desert and ice. Shira Plateau Route Kilimanjaro Trek is the most challenging and rewarding day of your trek. Your summit attempt begins in the early hours, with a steep and strenuous ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, just before sunrise. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp, nestled at an altitude of about 3,100 meters. This is a long and demanding day, covering a total distance of roughly 18 kilometers.

Elevation: 3100m to 1700m Distance: 9km Descending time: 3-4 hours Habitat: Montane forest. Your eight-day Shira Plateau Route Kilimanjaro Trek culminates with a descent through the verdant rainforest zone from the Mweka Camp to the Mweka Gate. The about 10-kilometer trip provides an alternative viewpoint of the peak. You will thank your committed guides and porters and receive your summit certificates when arriving at the Mweka Gate.
