The 7 days Machame route is specially designed to give you enough time to acclimatise and summit safely, offering an advantage over the 6 days Machame variant. Known as the Whiskey route, Machame is one of the most popular routes on Mount Kilimanjaro due to its natural beauty and varied environments. The route is more challenging and steep compared to some other routes and is recommended for climbers with previous high altitude trekking experience. The itinerary begins at Machame Gate and finishes by descending via the Mweka Route and exiting through Mweka Gate, with transfers to and from Moshi included.
Begin the trek at Machame Gate at 1790m and ascend to Machame Camp at 3010m. This first day initiates acclimatisation and introduces trekkers to the scenic environment of the Machame route with varied terrain and natural beauty. Campsite overnight at Machame Camp allows rest and recovery for subsequent days.
Continue ascending from Machame Camp at 3010m to Shira Camp at 3845m. This day provides further acclimatisation with increased altitude gain and exposure to the mountain environment. The route offers expansive views and diverse landscapes as you approach the Shira plateau. Overnight at Shira Camp enables rest before higher elevation trekking.
Depart Shira Cave area at around 3845m and traverse towards Barranco Camp at 3960m. This day features movement across high elevation terrain and continues the acclimatisation process while gaining altitude gradually. The approach to Barranco Camp positions trekkers for the challenging sections ahead. Overnight at Barranco Camp follows arrival.
Leave Barranco Camp at 3960m and proceed to Karanga Camp at approximately 3963m. This stage includes negotiating the Barranco Wall and traversing scenic alpine terrain while maintaining acclimatisation. The short altitude change belies technical sections of the trail. Overnight at Karanga Camp prepares climbers for the push to higher camps.
Ascend from Karanga Camp at 3963m up to Barafu Camp at 4640m. This is a major uphill day as the group moves to the high camp that will be used as the launch point for the summit attempt. The day involves significant altitude gain and requires careful pacing for acclimatisation. Overnight at Barafu Camp readies climbers for the summit bid.
From Barafu Camp at 4640m commence the summit push to UHURU PEAK at 5895m followed by descent to Millennium Camp at 3790m. This is the most demanding day: ascending to the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro, experiencing summit success at Uhuru Peak, and then descending substantially to a lower elevation campsite for recovery. This day is critical for timing and acclimatisation and culminates in an overnight at Millennium Camp.
Trek from Millennium Camp at 3790m down to Mweka Gate at 1630m, completing the descent via the Mweka Route. After exiting the park at Mweka Gate, transfers back to Moshi are provided. This final day involves significant downhill trekking and marks the successful completion of the Machame 7 day itinerary.
