The Marangu route is one of the oldest and most popular routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, also known as the Coca-Cola Trail or Tourist Trail. This 5 day Marangu itinerary uses mountain huts for accommodation at Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut and Kibo Hut making it ideal for climbers who do not like camping in tents. The route is relatively easier and shorter compared to many other routes and is used by a large proportion of Kilimanjaro climbers. The itinerary includes glacier summit attempt to Uhuru Peak and returns along the same route with transfers to and from Moshi.
Start at Marangu Gate at 1860m and trek up to Mandara Hut at 2700m. This first day establishes altitude gain as you move into the lower mountain zones, arriving at the Mandara Hut where accommodations are provided. The hut stay is part of the Marangu route pattern of hut based sleeping and allows climbers to prepare for higher elevations on subsequent days.
From Mandara Hut at 2700m continue ascending to Horombo Hut at 3700m. This longer day's trek gains significant altitude and helps with acclimatization. Camp or hut accommodation is provided at Horombo Hut which serves as a major stopover on the Marangu route.
Continue the climb from Horombo Hut at 3700m up to Kibo Hut at 4700m. This day moves you higher into alpine zones with progressively thinner air in preparation for the summit attempt. Overnight accommodation is at Kibo Hut to allow an early summit push.
An early summit push from Kibo Hut leads to Uhuru Peak at 5895m where you reach the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. After reaching Uhuru Peak there is a descent back down to Horombo Hut at 3700m for rest. This is the most challenging day with the highest altitude and major summit experience followed by a long descent.
Final descent from Horombo Hut at 3700m down to Marangu Gate at 1860m completing the Marangu route. After arriving at the gate you are transferred back to Moshi where the trek concludes and hotel transfers or departures are arranged.
