This is a 7 days itinerary of the Rongai route with an additional day for acclimatization. The Rongai route starts from the north side of Kilimanjaro and gradually ascends towards Uhuru Peak. The route is recommended for climbers with little or no prior high altitude experience because it has a gentle slope and a gentle approach to the summit. The route may increase risk of altitude sickness because it does not strictly follow the climb high sleep low rule; an extra day for acclimatization is recommended. The route approaches the summit from the northeastern side near the Kenya Tanzania border and reaches Uhuru Peak at 5895 meters.
Depart Moshi and transfer to Rongai Gate (Nalemoru) on the northeastern approach to Mount Kilimanjaro, then begin the trek to Simba Camp. This marks the start of the Rongai 7 day climb and includes travel from Moshi to the mountain, the approach on the northeastern slopes, establishment of camp at Simba Camp and initial acclimatization as you settle into mountain conditions.
Trek from Simba Camp toward the next campsite at Second Cave. The day continues the ascent on the Rongai route through shifting vegetation zones as you gain altitude, allowing for gradual acclimatization and progressive mountain experience.
Continue trekking from Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp, gaining altitude and moving across the northeastern slopes of Kilimanjaro. This day supports acclimatization with sustained trekking and camping at Kikelewa Camp.
From Kikelewa Camp the route ascends to Mawenzi Turn Hut. The trek continues to higher altitude with broader views toward Mawenzi and requires steady pace for acclimatization. Overnight is at Mawenzi Turn Hut as you prepare for higher camps.
Ascend from Mawenzi Turn Hut toward Kibo Hut approaching Kibo summit area. This is a significant altitude gain moving into the alpine desert zone and includes trekking to Kibo Hut where climbers rest and prepare for the summit attempt.
Begin a pre-dawn summit push from Kibo Camp to reach the summit at Uhuru Peak, then descend to Horombo Hut. This day includes the summit attempt reaching 5895 meters, followed by descent for recovery and overnight at Horombo Hut.
Descend from Horombo Hut down to Marangu Gate where the climb concludes, complete park formalities and transfer back to Moshi. The final day covers descent through lower vegetation zones and travel back to town, marking the end of the 7 day Rongai route climb.
