This is a 7 day itinerary of the Rongai route with an additional day for acclimatization. The Rongai route starts from the northeastern side of Kilimanjaro near the border of Kenya and Tanzania and approaches the summit from the north. The route features a generally gentle slope and an equally gentle approach to the summit making it suitable for climbers with little or no previous high altitude mountaineering experience. The route may present increased risk of altitude sickness because it does not follow the climb high sleep low rule strictly. The itinerary includes transfers to and from Moshi, experienced mountain guides and all meals while on the mountain.
Begin in Moshi with transfer to Rongai Gate also known as Nalemoru then trek to Simba Camp on the Rongai Route. The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the northeastern side and offers a gentle slope suitable for those with limited mountaineering experience. This day covers the transfer from Moshi to the mountain access point and the initial ascent to Simba Camp where climbers begin their mountain accommodation.
From Simba Camp continue the ascent along the Rongai Route heading toward Second Cave. The trail remains on the northeastern side of Kilimanjaro where conditions are typically drier than southern slopes. This day continues gradual ascent and further acclimatization on the mountain.
Depart Second Cave and trek onward to Kikelewa Camp. The route maintains gentle gradients and offers continued acclimatization opportunities as climbers progress higher on the Rongai Route. Expect mountain scenery typical of the northeastern approach to Kilimanjaro.
Leave Kikelewa Camp and continue the ascent to Mawenzi Turn Hut. The Mawenzi area provides higher altitude terrain and marks progression toward the upper mountain sectors. This day focuses on gaining elevation while maintaining pace for acclimatization.
From Mawenzi Turn Hut continue the climb toward Kibo Hut located closer to the summit zone. This segment moves climbers into higher alpine environment in preparation for the summit attempt. Activities include trekking and setting up at the high mountain hut.
Begin the summit push from Kibo Camp ascending toward Uhuru Peak and then descend to Horombo Hut. This day includes the final ascent to Mount Kilimanjaro summit at Uhuru Peak reaching 5895 meters and then a descent to lower elevation for rest at Horombo Hut. This is the most demanding day of the itinerary and includes summit experiences and extended trekking time.
Descend from Horombo Hut down to Marangu Gate and then transfer back to Moshi. This day completes the Rongai Route circuit returning climbers to the park gate and onward to their original starting town of Moshi. The descent concludes the trek and includes final transfers off the mountain.
