The Lakshmi Narayn temple has been dedicated to the Lakshmi Narayn or Vishnu ji. Vishnu who is the preserver in the Trimurti is also widely known as Narayan.
History
Having its construction started in 1933 this mandir has been dedicated to Vishnu Narayan ji and was built by famous industrialist and philanthropist, Baldeo Das Birla and his son Jugal Kishore Birla of Birla family, and thus has been named Birla Mandir. The temple has a lot famous personalities attached to it as the foundation stone was laid by Maharaj Udaybhanu Singh, its construction saw the guidance of Vishwanath Shastri, the concluding ceremony was marked with a Yagna performed by Swami Keshwa Nandji and most importantly the inauguration was done by the father of Indian freedom struggle, Mahatma Gandhi who agreed on the condition that it will be open for people from all castes as well as religion.
This auspicious building has been built in the Nagara style of Hindu temple architecture and the whole temple has been ornamented with carvings pertaining to different scenes from the Hindu Mythology. This beautiful piece of architecture has been intricately designed by skilled artisans from Banaras. Perched on a raised platform the temple faces east and also the highest Shikhara it displays is of 160 ft which is situated just above the Sanctum Sanctorum.
Especially marbles from Jaipur were brought for the construction of the icons. The icons of the temple are in marble brought from Jaipur. The work of the formation of the temple premises have been effectuated using Kota stone imported from Makarana, Agra, Kota and Jaisalmer. What further adds to the beauty of the temple is the artificial landscape and cascading waterfalls.
Temple
The temple houses a number of shrines; the shrine of Lord Narayan and Hindu Goddess Lakshmi being the main ones and smaller shrines as well which are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Hanuman. A very different feature of the temple is the presence of a shrine of Lord Buddha. Moreover, there is a dome on the left side temple which is called Shikhar and is the home to Devi Durga an epitome of Shakti or power. The temple covers an area of 7.5 acres (30,000 m2) approximately out of which only 0.52 acres (2,100 m2) has been developed.
Location
The road on which the temple is being located has also been named as Mandir Marg as two important temples lie on this road namely, Birla Mandir and Kalibari. It is very easy to reach here as one can chose from a no. of public transports like local buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws or even a metro.
