4-day trekking adventure. Located inside Arusha National Park, this rewarding journey offers a quieter and more intimate mountain experience than Kilimanjaro. The route passes through wildlife-filled grasslands, lush montane forests, alpine heathlands, and steep volcanic ridges. Starting from Momella Gate, the trail allows time for proper acclimatization at scenic campsites like Miriakamba and Saddle Huts. The pre-dawn summit hike leads you to breathtaking sunrise views over Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru’s dramatic crater rim. Led by certified guides and park rangers, this short expedition offers rich scenery, thrilling terrain, and an authentic East African climbing experience.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : Momella Gate (1,500m) to Miriakamba Hut (2,500m)

  Gardenia African Safaris warmly welcomes you to Mount Meru! We begin at Momella Gate, where our team handles registration and introductions to your park ranger. The 10 km trail meanders through savannah and lush rainforest. Keep your eyes open—wildlife like giraffes, buffaloes, and monkeys are frequently seen along the way. The walk is scenic and gentle, with elevation gradually increasing. After 4–5 hours, we arrive at Miriakamba Hut, nestled in a tranquil forest clearing with mountain views. After a freshly prepared dinner by your Gardenia cook, your guide will brief you for the next day’s adventure. This first day helps you acclimatize and appreciate the park’s natural beauty.

• Day 2 : Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3,570m)

  After breakfast, our Gardenia mountain team leads you through a steep but scenic 8 km hike. The trail ascends through montane forest into open moorland, where giant heathers and alpine flowers color the slopes. A highlight of the day is Elephant Ridge (Mgongo wa Tembo), with panoramic views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone. Upon reaching Saddle Hut, you’ll rest and enjoy a hot lunch. In the afternoon, we offer an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m)—a short yet scenic climb that helps prepare your body for the summit. After returning to camp, enjoy a hearty dinner and get some early sleep before the big day.

• Day 3 : Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak (4,566m) – Return to Miriakamba Hut

  Summit day begins around midnight. Gardenia’s experienced guides lead you up the rocky, narrow trail past Rhino Point and Cobra Point, walking along the crater rim with dramatic drop-offs and sunrise on the horizon. After a 5–6 hour climb, you’ll stand on Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru. Take in breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru’s crater, and the distant plains of Tanzania and Kenya. After photos and celebration, descend carefully to Saddle Hut for brunch. Then continue to Miriakamba Hut for your final overnight. This long but unforgettable day is the emotional and physical peak of your adventure.

• Day 4 : Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate – Transfer to Arusha

  After a relaxed breakfast, begin your final 10 km descent through the forest. The trail winds past waterfalls, clearings, and wildlife—your last chance to enjoy the biodiversity of Arusha National Park. Expect to spot birds, monkeys, and possibly giraffes as you make your way back to Momella Gate. At the gate, receive your Mount Meru summit certificate—a proud moment for every hiker. Your Gardenia African Safaris vehicle and driver will be waiting to return you to Arusha for a hot shower and celebration. You may continue with a safari extension or a relaxing escape to Zanzibar—we’ll gladly assist with arrangements.
