Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom on the Himalayas’ eastern edge, is known for its monasteries, fortresses (or dzongs) and dramatic landscapes that range from subtropical plains to steep mountains and valleys. In the High Himalayas, peaks such as 7,326m Jomolhari are popular trekking destinations. Paro Taktsang monastery (also known as Tiger’s Nest) clings to cliffs above the forested Paro Valley.
In 2006, the fourth king of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck announced that he would abdicate in favour of a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. In 2008, the year that marked 100 years of the monarchy saw two important events; the first democratic elections and the coronation of the fifth king, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
• Arrive at Bagdogra Airport. Our representative will meet and greet you and then complete with the Pre-registration formalities of the individual at Immigration counter. After that transfer to hotel. Check into the hotel and relax.
• Later drive to Thimphu .Enroute stop at Chuzom, the confluence of Thimphu and Paro rivers. Three different style of stupas; Tibetan, Nepalese and Bhutanese adorn this confluence.
• On arrival in Thimphu, check into the hotel.
• Afternoon sightseeing in Thimphu valley including visit to the following: Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang). Located at a short drive from Thimphu city centre, visitors can get a good overview of the Thimphu valley from the Buddha point (KuenselPhodrang). You can pay your obeisance and offer prayers to the Buddha, the largest statue in the country and then walk around and take a glimpse of the valley.
• King's Memorial Chorten continuously circumambulated by people, murmuring mantras and spinning their prayer wheels. Construction of this landmark was the idea of Bhutan’s third king, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk (“the father of modern Bhutan”) who has wished to erect monument to world peace and prosperity. Completed in 1974 after his untimely death, it serves both as a memorial to the Late King and as a monument to peace.
• The National Library, housing an extensive collection of priceless Buddhist manuscripts; the Institute for Zorig Chusum (commonly known as the Painting School) where students undergo a 6-year training course in Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts and crafts. Later visit Textile Museum, which provides insight into Bhutan’s one of the most distinct art form. Also visit Simply Bhutan, a living museum and studio encapsulating the cultural heritage of the Bhutanese people.
• Overnight at the hotel in Thimphu.
• After breakfast drive to Wangdi (Wangdiphodrang)
• Wangdi is the last town on the highway before entering Central Bhutan. The drive is over Dochu La pass (3080Mts / 10102Fts) which is very scenic with fascinating view of mountains of Bhutan. At Punakha visit Punakha Dzong, Chimi Lhakhang (Monastery), Evening you drive back to Paro.
• The Dochu La is a mountain pass in the snow covered Himalayas within Bhutan on the road from Thimphu to Punakha where 108 memorial chortens or stupas known as "Druk Wangyal Chortens" have been built by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother.
• Overnight at the Hotel in Paro.
• After breakfast excursion to Taktshang Monastery or Tiger’s Nest (approx. 5 hours walk):
• It is one of the most famous of Bhutan’s monasteries, perched on the side of a cliff 900m above the Paro valley floor. It is said that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this monastery and hence it is called ‘Tiger’s Nest’. This site has been recognised as a most sacred place and visited by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1646 and now visited by all Bhutanese at least once in their lifetime. On 19 April, 1998, a fire severely damaged the main structure of building but now this Bhutanese jewel has been restored to its original splendour.
• Afternoon drive to Drukgyel Dzong, a ruined fortress where Bhutanese warriors fought Tibetan invaders centuries ago. The snowy dome of sacred Chomolhari, "mountain of goddess'' can be seen in all her glory from the approach road to the Dzong.
• Evening, visit the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples built in the Himalayas by Tibetan King, Songtsen Gampo. The building of this temple marks the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan.
• Overnight at the hotel in Paro.
• Today we head back to Phuntsholing after your breakfast. On the way back,
• Visit Ta Dzong, the National Museum of the Kingdom. Originally built as Watch Tower since 1967 it is serving as the National Museum of the country and holding fascinating collection of art, artefacts, Thangkha paintings and Bhutan’s exquisite postage stamps. Then walk down the trail to visit Rinpung Dzong which has a long and fascinating history.
• Overnight at Phuntsholing.
• After Breakfast & with packed bags, it’s time to bid goodbye to a wonderful week in Bhutan. After that we head back to Phuentsholing Terminal and exit and continue to Bagdogra for your flight. The trip ends here.
SHOPPING SUGGESTION ----There are many Buddhist Souvenir shops across the Bhutan border just 100mt from Phuentsholing Bhutan gate. You can buy good amount of souvenirs starting from prayers flags@ 50rs / Buddha statues @ 200-300Rs / Bells @ 700Rs; small Bhutanese theme bags @ 100 Rs & hand bags @ 300 Rs.You can do it on the day of arrival or on day of departure if time permits. We suggest you to do it on day 1 evening. Try out the local momos in everywhere.
