Located in the Bhalswa Horseshoe Lake, or Bhalswa Jheel, northwestern part of Delhi was indigenously in the shape of a horse-shoe. However, a large part of it was then used as a landfill area which was then later occupied by a low income housing colony which turned out to be an addition to the Bhalswa Jahangir Pur, a closely situated town. With the augmentation of Human life in this area, the area underwent a huge negative change as it was looted of its wetland ecosystem and wildlife habitat which served to be the habitat to both local as well as migratory wildlife species, which principally included water birds like waterfowl, storks and cranes.
The lake of Bhalswa was formed as a by-product of the change of course of Yamuna River which happens once in many years. However, now in order to save the capital City from floods the river is channeled and fortified with embankments. However, a part of the Lake surrounding area is lying on its west and which lies as a landfill still homes the habitat local residual wildlife. The trees that grow there are Acacis, Babool and Keekar. Initially proclaimed to be the habitat for rich wildlife, after its destruction owing to the greedy human activities, this lake later saw conversions into a games/sports spot on the orders of the Delhi government. This lake must not be confused with another Horseshoe lake whose name is ANSUPA and which finds its location near SARANDA hills and which is situated 100 km west of Cuttack district in Orissa.
The lake situated at GT Karnal Road and occupying an area of 92 ha is also one of the most promising, interesting, and accomplished programs of DDA. The project initially boasted about converting the lake into a fully fledged commercial and recreational center for the whole family where they could spend their entire weekend and has to a great extent executed it.
The project’s promises about making full arrangements for golf as well as some water sports can be seen living reality in the today’s Bhalswa Jheel. It sites, which were marked for the construction of commercial complexes, have been fully constructed now. Moreover, in addition to the business expanding activities, environment-concerned activities like practice of forestation to augment better ecological balance have also been practiced. The boating lovers will find condolence in pedal boats, kayaks, canoes and speed boats which can be hired for boating. In addition to this water scooters were also introduced in Delhi for the first time to increase the enjoyment of boating manifolds. A visit to this place will enthrall the visitors with the refreshing adventures which it comes with owing to the activities like parasailing, rock climbing, trekking, water sports including boating and hovercraft rides that can be enjoyed here.
