Dowleswaram barrage is a popular tourist attraction that stands on the lower stretch of the river Godavari. This barrage was constructed in the year 1850 by a British irrigation engineer, Sir Arthur Thomas. It was constructed to monitor the flow of water and ensure its sufficient supply for the purpose of irrigation. At present, Dowleswaram Barrage is a famous destination in Rajahmundry and is visited by a large number of tourists on a daily basis.
The Reason Behind Its Construction:-
Prior the construction of Dowleswaram Barrage, a major portion of the land was eroded due to floods and was of no use. When Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton was appointed to build the barrage, he designed it in such a manner that the land that was once flooded gained back its fertility and was brought into use.
In order to commemorate the great contribution of Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton, a museum named Sir Cotton Museum is constructed. It is also visited by tourists on a large scale.
