Kotilingeswara Temple

Kotilingeswara, or Kotilingeshwara, is an eminent Hindu shrine in the Indian state of Karnataka. The complete name of the shrine is Kotilingeshwara Swamy Temple and it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is located in Kammasandra Village and is visited by a large number of tourists and devotees daily. The footfall increases on the occasion of Mahashivaratri.

It Is Known For:-
1) Kotilingeshwara Temple houses one of the largest Shivalingams in the world.
2) This temple was built in 1980 and gained recognition immediately. The devotees from foreign lands also visited and made precious offerings and huge donations to the temple.

The Legend:-
There is an interesting legend related to Kotilingeshwara Temple. A man named Manjunatha was born in the Brahmin family that belonged to the Shaivait section. Despite being a man of a good character, he was an atheist and never believed in the God. Slowly, he began to incline towards religious traditions followed by his family and became an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Upon visiting a temple, all the lamps became unlit. He realized the sin he had committed and sang Mayakeya Deepam composed by the sage Ved Vyasa. As he completed the last word, all lamps began to glow again.

The best time to pay a visit to Kotilingeshwara Temple is throughout the year. However, if an individual wants to see the enhanced charm of this shrine then visiting the place on the occasion of Mahashivaratri can be the best choice. Photography and videography are allowed in the temple premises.
