This 5-day safari typically starts and ends in Nairobi or Mombasa and is designed to explore Kenyas largest protected wilderness system split into two contrasting parks: Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Tsavo East is known for its wide open plains and iconic red elephants, while Tsavo West is more rugged, volcanic, and scenic, featuring springs, hills, and dense wildlife habitats. Travel is usually done in a 4x4 safari Land Cruiser or safari van, with accommodation ranging from budget camps to luxury lodges depending on preference.
Early morning departure through the Nairobi–Mombasa highway to Tsavo East National Park. Entry into Tsavo East marks the beginning of game viewing almost immediately, as wildlife roams freely near the park gate. The afternoon game drive focuses on sightings of red elephants dusting themselves in iron rich soil, lions, giraffes, zebras and buffalo, with views of the Galana River and open savannah landscapes. Overnight accommodation is in a lodge or tented camp inside or near Tsavo East.
A full day dedicated to wildlife viewing across Tsavo East, exploring varied habitats and key natural features. Highlights include visiting Lugard Falls on the Galana River and viewing the Yatta Plateau, one of the worlds longest lava flows, while tracking large elephant herds and predators. Evening relaxation takes place at the lodge with an optional sunset game drive available depending on schedule and lodge offerings.
After breakfast, transfer from Tsavo East to Tsavo West, an approximate 3 to 4 hours drive. Afternoon game drive in Tsavo West explores dramatic and volcanic terrain including the Shetani Lava Flows, visits the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary and traverses scenic rocky hills and dense vegetation. Tsavo West offers a more rugged and dramatic landscape compared to East and increases opportunities for diverse wildlife encounters.
Full immersion in Tsavo Wests diverse ecosystem with a day of game drives and exploration. Highlights include Mzima Springs with crystal clear water inhabited by hippos and crocodiles, vistas of the Chyulu Hills, and wide opportunities for big game spotting including elephants, lions, leopards and buffalo. Depending on lodge policy, optional guided nature walks may be available to complement vehicle based game drives.
Final early morning game drive in Tsavo West followed by breakfast and departure from the park. This last exit provides a final opportunity to spot predators and other wildlife before returning to Nairobi or coastal beach destinations such as Mombasa. Transfer time varies depending on chosen endpoint.
