The Machame Route is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro and for good reason. It offers stunning scenery, excellent acclimatization through its 'climb high, sleep low' profile, and a high summit success rate. Known as the 'Whiskey Route' for being tougher than the Marangu 'Coca-Cola Route', Machame approaches from the southwest and traverses multiple ecological zones. The route is fully tented — no huts are available. The route's biggest advantage is its acclimatization profile. After reaching the Shira Plateau at 3,840m, the route climbs to Lava Tower at 4,630m before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,960m — the classic 'climb high, sleep low' strategy.
