Package Overview

The Merak Sakteng Eco Trek is a unique cultural and ecological trekking experience in the far eastern region of Bhutan. Unlike many of Bhutan’s high-altitude mountain treks, this trek takes travelers through the remote and culturally distinct villages of Merak and Sakteng, home to the Brokpa people, a semi-nomadic community known for their unique traditions, attire, and way of life. The trek provides a rare opportunity to explore the less-visited, lush landscapes of eastern Bhutan while immersing in the rich culture and sustainable lifestyle of the Brokpas.

Highlights of the Merak Sakteng Eco Trek:
Cultural Immersion with the Brokpa People: The trek passes through the villages of Merak and Sakteng, allowing travelers to experience the distinct traditions, language, and customs of the Brokpa people. The Brokpas are semi-nomadic herders who live in one of the most isolated parts of Bhutan, and they maintain a unique culture, including wearing traditional woolen clothing and yak-hair hats.
Untouched Landscapes: The trek takes you through pristine forests, wide meadows, and rolling hills, offering breathtaking views of lush valleys, snow-capped mountains, and rivers. Unlike the rocky, high-altitude treks in the west of Bhutan, the Merak Sakteng region is characterized by its verdant forests and gentler terrain.
Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary: A key feature of this trek is its route through the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected area rich in biodiversity. The sanctuary is home to species such as the red panda, Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, Himalayan musk deer, and many birds, including the satyr tragopan and blood pheasant. The trek offers the chance to explore Bhutan’s unique flora and fauna in a less-trodden wilderness.
Cultural Festivals: Depending on the timing of your trek, you might have the opportunity to witness traditional Brokpa festivals, such as the Yak Dance and other cultural performances, which reflect the spiritual beliefs and folklore of the Brokpa community.
Eco-Friendly Trek: The Merak Sakteng Trek is designed to promote sustainable tourism and preserve the delicate ecological and cultural environment of the region. The trek is part of Bhutan's broader focus on maintaining its status as a carbon-negative country, ensuring that the local environment and culture are protected from the negative impacts of mass tourism.
Experience Bhutan’s unique culture up-close with farmhouse visits and village excursions.
Visit many cultural attractions including medieval fortresses (Dzongs), markets and museums.
Hike up to the famous Taktsang Monastery, perched on a cliff 900m above the valley floor.

Route Overview:
The trek begins from the town of Chaling, close to Trashigang, and covers a circular route through the remote villages of Merak and Sakteng, eventually ending in Trashigang. It traverses through forested valleys, over mountain passes, and across rivers, offering a relatively moderate trek with numerous opportunities for cultural encounters and wildlife spotting.

Best Time to Trek:
The best time to undertake the Merak Sakteng Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons provide the most pleasant weather for trekking, with clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and the opportunity to see the region in its most vibrant natural state. Spring is especially beautiful with blooming rhododendrons, while autumn offers crisp air and great visibility for mountain views.

Key Stops Along the Trek:
Chaling: The starting point of the trek, located near Trashigang, a vibrant town and cultural hub in eastern Bhutan.
Merak: A traditional Brokpa village, where trekkers can engage with the locals, explore their way of life, and experience the serene beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Sakteng: Another Brokpa village, known for its distinctive cultural heritage and unique traditions. The village offers a deeper insight into the lives of Bhutan's semi-nomadic communities.
Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary: A biodiversity hotspot, providing trekkers with the chance to observe rare wildlife and explore unspoiled nature.

Unique Features:
Cultural Preservation: The trek offers a rare opportunity to visit a part of Bhutan where traditional culture remains largely untouched by modernization. The Brokpa people have preserved their ancient customs, dialect, and attire for centuries.
Sustainable Tourism: As an eco-trek, Merak Sakteng is designed to minimize the environmental impact on the region and to promote sustainable, responsible tourism. Visitors are encouraged to respect the local environment, wildlife, and culture, ensuring that the area remains preserved for future generations.
Traditional Architecture: Both Merak and Sakteng villages showcase traditional Bhutanese architecture, with homes built using natural materials like stone and wood. The villages are aesthetically pleasing and blend seamlessly into the surrounding environment.

Conclusion:
The Merak Sakteng Eco Trek is a perfect blend of cultural exploration and ecological adventure, providing trekkers with a unique experience in one of Bhutan’s most remote regions. With its lush landscapes, rich biodiversity, and deep cultural significance, this trek offers an opportunity to witness a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries. For trekkers seeking a more culturally immersive and less physically demanding experience, the Merak Sakteng Trek is an ideal choice, showcasing Bhutan’s eastern beauty and its commitment to sustainable tourism.

Perched dramatically on the edge of a sheer rock cliff, plunging 900 meters into the valley below, it is a sight to behold. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava, the tantric mystic who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan in 747 AD, flew to this sacred spot on the back of a flying tiger, Dorji Drolo, from Kurtoe Singye Dzong in the east.

Our exploration continues with a visit to Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower built in 1656 and renovated in 1968, which now houses the National Museum.
