The Jomolhari Trek is one of the most popular and scenic trekking routes in Bhutan, offering stunning views of the majestic Jomolhari Mountain (also known as Chomolhari), which stands at an impressive 7,326 meters (24,035 feet) along the border between Bhutan and Tibet. Route Overview:
The Jomolhari Trek typically begins from Sharna Zampa (after driving from Paro) and follows the Pa Chhu (Paro River) valley through forests and meadows. The trek leads to the base camp of Jomolhari at Jangothang (4,080 m), one of the most picturesque camping sites in the Himalayas. From here, trekkers ascend to the higher passes, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas before descending through yak pastures and villages.

Best Time to Trek:
The best seasons for the Jomolhari Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). During these times, the weather is clear, and the landscapes are at their most beautiful, with blooming flowers in spring and vibrant colors in autumn.

    Arrival Paro

    Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, a Bhutan Travel Experts representative will be waiting outside the arrival terminal, holding a placard with your name on it. The representative will greet you in the traditional manner by offering a Trashi Khadar (greeting scarf), and will be your guide for the entire tour.
    Start your day by exploring Rinpung Dzong, a 17th-century Buddhist monastery and fortress, and the National Museum. Next, visit Jangtsa Dumtseg Lhakhang, a temple symbolizing the different stages of rebirth, and climb between its levels to see beautiful displays of Buddhist artwork. End your day by visiting Drukgyal Dzong, a fortress and Buddhist monastery in ruins, now being rebuilt to commemorate significant events in Bhutan’s history.

    Hike To Taktsang Monastery Or Tiger’s Nest

    After a hearty breakfast, we will take you to the trailhead for a hike through the stunning pine forest, and stop at the Taktsang cafeteria for light refreshments before continuing to the famous Taktsang Monastery, or the Tiger’s Nest. This awe-inspiring monastery was built in 1684 around Guru Rimpoche’s meditation cave by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgay, the Penlop of Paro. The monastery is perched on the edge of a sheer rock cliff that drops 900m into the valley below. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava flew here on the back of a flying tiger, Dorji Drolo from Kurtoe Singye Dzong in the east.
    After lunch, we will visit Drugyal Dzong, 16 km away from Paro, which was a ruined fortress that played a significant role in Bhutan’s history as it was where the Bhutanese finally defeated the Tibetan invasion. On a clear day, you can see the sacred Mt. Jomolhari, the mountain of the Goddess. Later we will visit Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower built-in 1656, which now houses the National Museum. Below the museum, you’ll find the Rinpung Dzong, which means the “Heap of Jewels.” It was built-in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and served as the center of civil and religious authority in the valley. The stunning architecture and rich history of these structures make for an unforgettable experience.

    Paro – Gunitsawa – Thangthangkha

    Begin your day with an early breakfast, and then embark on a scenic drive of 35 kilometers north from your hotel in Paro valley to reach Sharna Zampa, the starting point of your trek. As you arrive, your trekking crew will be ready to greet you. Following a brief meeting, you will commence your trail, experiencing a mix of ascents and descents through enchanting pine, oak, and spruce forests. After around 2 hours of continuous hiking and crossing several streams, you will arrive at Shingkharap, a stone house nestled at an altitude of 3110 meters. Here, a delicious hot lunch awaits you on the left side of the river, after crossing the bridge. Continuing on, you will encounter a trail junction where the left path signifies an ancient trade route and invasion path from Tibet, while the right path leads to a wooden bridge (which we will follow). As you ascend through rhododendron forests and cross the bridge once again, you will arrive at our campsite situated at 3750 meters, surrounded by picturesque meadows.

    Thangthangkha – Jangothang

    The day starts with an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the magnificent Mount Jomolhari, which can be seen from the campsite. The trek then continues up the Paro Chhu valley, which gradually widens into patches of alpine meadows and sparse forests. Along the way, you will cross an army checkpoint and be treated to breathtaking views of high mountain ridges and snow-capped peaks. The landscape is dotted with yaks and the homes of their herders. The trek also passes through several charming villages, including Soe, Takethang, and Dangochang.
    After reaching Jangothang, one of the most beautiful campsites in the Himalayas, you will have another opportunity to take in the stunning sight of Mount Jomolhari. The mountain dominates the skyline and is an awe-inspiring sight to behold. The campsite is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and pristine alpine scenery, making it an ideal place to relax and unwind.
    Dinner and overnight camping will be at Jangothang, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking surroundings.

    Jangothang – Soi Yaksa

    Follow the trail as it winds its way north, leading you to the final settlement nestled within the valley. Descend towards the tranquil Paro Chhu river, where you will traverse its waters by crossing a sturdy wooden bridge. Embark on an ascent towards the magnificent Tshophu Lake, situated at an impressive altitude of 4,380 meters. This serene body of water is home to a variety of ruddy-shel ducks, adding a touch of vibrant wildlife to the picturesque landscape.
    Continuing your journey, you will encounter a second lake after navigating a slope that leads to a crest. From there, descend into a hidden valley before embarking on a steep climb towards the Bonte La pass, standing tall at an elevation of 4,890 meters. As you conquer the pass, revel in the breathtaking panoramic views that unfold before you.
    Once you’ve crossed the pass, the trail meanders downward, crisscrossing through well-trodden yak trails, guiding you to the meandering Dhumzo Chhu river. As you walk downstream, passing by a handful of houses, you will eventually reach a campsite nestled at an elevation of 3,800 meters. Rest and rejuvenate in this idyllic setting, surrounded by nature’s grandeur, as you prepare for the next leg of your unforgettable adventure.

    Soi Yaksa – Thombu Shong

    Ascend from the valley, scaling the heights to reach the Thombu La pass at an elevation of 4,380 meters. From there, begin a gradual descent, gradually lowering yourself to approximately 4,000 meters. The trail then takes a steep plunge, weaving through switchbacks as it descends along the ridge. Eventually, you will arrive at the helipad located at Gunitsawa, nestled at an altitude of 2,730 meters. At this point, your awaiting vehicle will be ready to transport you. Embark on a scenic drive back to Thimphu, where you can rejoice in your return to civilization by indulging in a refreshing shower at your hotel.   • There is no personal insurance of any kind included in the tour price. So, you are advised to arrange travel insurance from your place of residence in advance for your stay in Bhutan. Whilst the country has a good standard of medical and hospital facilities, it does not offer the facilities that only a larger population can support.

  • There are no rules about what visitors should wear. However, if you are planning to visit places of religious significance, respectful smart-casual clothing that covers your body from shoulders to knees is appropriate and appreciated.
  • Things that can’t be taken out of Bhutan
  • Keeping important antiques and artefacts in Bhutan is a key part of how we preserve our heritage for future generations. We have a law that sets out which artistic, historic, cultural, religious, social, archaeological and technical objects you may not take with you when you leave.   • Drone
  • A permit, which must be applied for in advance, is required to fly a drone either recreationally or commercially in Bhutan. Please email media@tcb.gov.bt to obtain one.
  • Currency Exchange
  • You can change your local currency for ngultrum upon arrival at Paro International Airport or at banks, larger hotels and authorized currency exchange businesses in Thimphu.
  • Credit card / ATM Card / RuPay card
  • ATM and banks accept Visa and MasterCard. International credit cards are widely used in urban areas of Bhutan. However, this service may not be available in other parts of the country. Visitors can download the digital wallet app goBoB launched by the Bank of Bhutan, which can be used with a local SIM card and is widely accepted throughout the country.
  • Cash in US dollars and Indian rupees is also widely accepted. We advise bringing some cash in either of these currencies, or in ngultrum.

  • Travel Etiquette
  • Bhutan is the last Vajrayana Buddhist country in the world and it contains many revered religious sites – from roadside stupas to temples, monasteries and nunneries.
  • Please maintain silence to respect our people’s faith when visiting any sacred site.
  • Please be mindful if you want to photograph those praying or participating in one of our many holy festivals. Ensure you do not stand between religious observers and an altar or otherwise obstruct our people’s right to practice their faith in peace.
  • As a sign of respect, please remove caps and hats when visiting sacred sites or meeting elders. If seated on the floor with a monk, nun, elder or host, it’s advisable to sit cross-legged.
  • When visiting a temple, please wear long sleeves and cover your legs. Remove your shoes upon entering and refrain from taking photos inside sacred sites. Please do not sit on the lamas’ sacred thrones inside temples, or touch any religious items or paintings.
