Package Overview

The Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek is a spectacular yet lesser-known trek in Bhutan, renowned for its pristine alpine lakes, stunning mountain views, and unspoiled natural beauty. This trek offers a relatively short and moderate journey compared to Bhutan’s more challenging treks, making it an excellent option for those seeking a rewarding wilderness experience without the extreme difficulty of high-altitude routes. Along the way, trekkers are treated to breathtaking vistas of the Himalayas and the peaceful ambiance of the many lakes that dot the landscape, hence the name “Thousand Lakes Trek.”

Highlights of the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek:
Scenic Lakes: The trek is famous for its numerous high-altitude lakes, ranging from small crystal-clear ponds to large shimmering alpine lakes. These lakes, often surrounded by rugged mountains and blooming wildflowers, offer a serene and tranquil experience.
Mountain Views: The trek offers panoramic views of some of the world’s most iconic peaks, including Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Jomolhari, Masang Gang, and others. On clear days, the sight of these towering Himalayan giants from the trekking route is truly awe-inspiring.

Cultural Experience: Although the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek is primarily focused on nature, it also offers glimpses into Bhutanese rural life. The trek begins near Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, and passes through traditional villages where trekkers can experience the local culture and lifestyle.
Remote Wilderness: One of the key attractions of this trek is the sense of isolation and tranquility. The trail is less frequented by tourists compared to more popular treks, allowing for an immersive experience in Bhutan’s untouched wilderness.
Experience Bhutan’s unique culture up-close with farmhouse visits and village excursions.
Visit many cultural attractions including medieval fortresses (Dzongs), markets and museums.
Hike up to the famous Taktsang Monastery, perched on a cliff 900m above the valley floor.

The trek features gentle ascents and descents, making it accessible to trekkers with moderate fitness levels. The trail also passes by several other lakes, each with its own unique charm.

  • Day 8

    Thimphu – Paro

Accommodation: 3 stars rated hotel in Punakha
    Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Today’s journey starts with a drive over the Dochu-La Pass at an altitude of 3,100 meters. This scenic drive takes about three hours, during which one can enjoy breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks. On a clear day, the pass provides an incredible view of the snow-capped mountains. During the drive, you can catch a glimpse of the everyday life of Bhutanese people living in remote areas. The Dochu-La area is famous for its vast Rhododendron forests that bloom in late April/early May, covering the mountains in a riot of glorious spring colors.
Upon arrival in Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan, you will visit Punakha Dzong, also known as the “Palace of Great Happiness.” Built-in 1637 by the Shabdrung, the unifier of Bhutan, the dzong is located at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu (Mother and Father Rivers). It serves as the winter headquarters of the Je Khenpo and hundreds of monks who move en masse from Thimphu to this warmer location. The three-story main temple of the Punakha Dzong is an awe-inspiring example of traditional Bhutanese architecture with four intricately embossed entrance pillars crafted from cypress and decorated in gold and silver. It was at this site in 1907 that Bhutan’s first king was crowned.
After lunch, you will enjoy a walk to Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the temple of the Drukpa Kuenly, who is revered as the Divine Madman. He earned this title by rebelling against orthodox Buddhism and promoting the idea that religion is an inner feeling and that one does not necessarily have to be an ordained monk to have a connection with spirituality. He is also considered a symbol of fertility, and many childless couples visit his temple for a blessing.
