Package Overview

The Laya Gasa Trek is one of Bhutan’s most rewarding and challenging trekking routes, known for its stunning mountain scenery, remote villages, and opportunities to experience the rich culture of the indigenous Layap people. This trek combines the beauty of the Himalayas with a glimpse into the traditional, isolated lifestyles of Bhutan’s northern highlanders.

Highlights of the Laya Gasa Trek:
Dramatic Mountain Scenery: The trek provides breathtaking views of some of Bhutan’s highest peaks, including Mount Jomolhari (7,326 m), Jichu Drake (6,794 m), and Teri Kang (7,300 m). Along the way, trekkers encounter high passes, alpine meadows, and glacial rivers.
Laya Village: One of the main attractions of the trek is Laya, a remote village situated at 3,800 meters, home to the Layap people, a unique indigenous group known for their distinctive clothing and semi-nomadic lifestyle. Trekkers get a chance to interact with the locals, learn about their customs, and witness their traditional way of life.
Gasa Hot Springs: After the strenuous trek, the Gasa Hot Springs offer a natural, therapeutic retreat. Located near the end of the trek, these natural springs are believed to have healing properties and are a popular destination for locals and trekkers alike.
Wildlife: The Laya Gasa Trek passes through the Jigme Dorji National Park, one of Bhutan's largest national parks, known for its rich biodiversity. Trekkers may spot wildlife such as blue sheep, takins (Bhutan’s national animal), Himalayan black bears, and, with luck, the elusive snow leopard.
Cultural Immersion: In addition to visiting Laya, trekkers pass through several remote Bhutanese villages and experience the country’s traditional lifestyles and customs. These villages are far removed from modern infrastructure, giving travelers a true sense of Bhutan’s untouched cultural heritage.
High Mountain Passes: The trek features challenging high passes, including Nyele La Pass (4,870 m) and Tsemo La Pass (4,750 m). These passes offer stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and vast valleys.
Gasa Dzong: The ancient fortress in Gasa, perched dramatically on a hill, is an architectural and cultural gem, offering insight into Bhutanese history.
Experience Bhutan’s unique culture up-close with farmhouse visits and village excursions.
Visit many cultural attractions including medieval fortresses (Dzongs), markets and museums.
Hike up to the famous Taktsang Monastery, perched on a cliff 900m above the valley floor.

Route Overview:
The trek typically begins from Sharna Zampa near Paro, following the same initial route as the Jomolhari Trek. After reaching the base camp of Mount Jomolhari at Jangothang, the Laya Gasa Trek diverges, heading towards the remote village of Laya. From Laya, the route continues to Gasa and eventually concludes at the Gasa Hot Springs.

Best Time to Trek:
The best seasons for the Laya Gasa Trek are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November). During these times, the weather is clearer, making it ideal for viewing the snow-capped mountains and enjoying the vibrant alpine flora.
