The name Maun is derived from the San word 'maung', meaning the place of short reeds. It is the fifth largest town in Botswana with hip-hop streets and magnificent building. The temperatures are generally high because the city receives bright and sharp sunlight almost throughout the year.

With economic prosperity and development, Maun boasts of excellent restaurants, dicos, bars, exclusive shopping malls and complexes etc. The perfect weather, inspiring scenic beauty and friendly atmosphere makes it an ideal tourist’s destination. Now the city of Maun has become the "tourism capital" of Botswana and the administrative centre of Ngamiland district.

Tourist Attractions - Best Places to Visit

    Thye Nhabe Museum : - Thye Nhabe Museum is a museum worth visiting as it puts light on the natural history and culture of the Okavango area of Maun.

    Crocodile Farm : - Crocodile Farm is a favorite spot of the people located 12 Kms south of Maun. There are some fine Nile crocodiles on show and the farm provides general information on crocodile farming.

    Sitatunga Campsite : - Sitatunga Campsite offers mokoro trips to the delta.

    Maun Game Reserve : - Maun Game Reserve is the smallest of its kind and can be explored on simple walking trails.

People coming to Maun must try out this which will surely leave them speechless. You can fly over the beautiful delta from the Maun Airport. It is really an awe-inspiring scene to watch a delta from a height. The spectacular view of the delta will leave you spell bound.

Local Transport

There are many means of transport to tour this small but wonderful city. You can choose between renting a car and hiring a taxi which is quite comfortable but expensive. Local buses are also available that travel to every corner of the city.

Getting Around

Maun International Airport, serviced by Air Botswana has numerous direct flights from Johannesburg in South Africa, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Windhoek in Namibia. You can reach any of these places and then take a connecting flight to reach Maun. Maun does have buses but they are not frequent and crowded.
