About Agartala

Agartala, the capital of Tripura is rich in flora and fauna and is a mini storehouse of rich cultural diversity. It gained prominence when Maharaja Krishna Manikya shifted his capital here in the 19th century. It has one of the loveliest State Assembly and a number of lakes in different parts of the city that attract many tourists.

Climate: It is characterised by moderate temperatures and highly humid atmosphere. Summers are hot and winters are cold.

Fourteen Goddess Temple

The temple is located about 14 kms from Agartala at a place called the old Agartala, thus called because the capital was temporarily shifted to this place while Maharaja Krishna Manikya was at war with Shamser Gazi. The famous Kharchi Festival celebrated here, annually, during the month of July attracts thousands of pilgrims.

In the face of continued fight with Shamser Gazi, Maharaja Krishna Manikya shifted the capital from Udaipur to Old Agartala. It continued to be the capital till it was shifted to Agartala.

Though the temples are 14 in number, Lord Shiva and Buddha are the principal deities. The images are made of eight metals, alloy of gold, silver, lead, bell metal, brass, iron, copper and zinc..

Kunjaban Palace

A green hillock known as Kunjaban ( a bower) for its scenic beauty stands to the north of Ujjayanta palace at a distance of about 1 Km. Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya (1909-1923) selected this beautiful place for building a suburban palace for retreat and constructed a palace in 1917 which was named as ‘Pushbanta Palace’.

The Maharaja himself being gifted artist is said to have drawn the plan of the palace and its adjoining garden. Though not far away yet being a palace came to be regarded as ideal for relaxation and pleasure strolls in the past for its green beauty, green gardens, orchard and a small zoo.

Poet Rabindranath Tagore stayed in the eastern apartment of this palace during his 7th and last visit to the state in 1926. This palace was the mute witness to many of the great poet's creations including a number of popular songs. There are well laid gardens and lawns inside the palace which is the official residence of the Governor of Tripura now. The southern side of the garden has been made open for the public and has been named as ‘Rabindra Kanan’..

Malancha Niwas

This is a bungalow adjacent to Kunjaban palace, which was originally a temporary house, where Tagore stayed during his visit in 1919, but subsequently was made a permanent one and named Malancha Niwas. It was mainly meant for pleasure and rest house of Maharajas.

Originally this place was a kaccha house just beside the Kunjaban Palace that was later constructed into a pucca bunglow. There was an underground tunnel from Malancha connected with Ujjayanta Castle..

Neermahal

A Summer resort built in 1930 by the late Maharaj Birbikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, is about 55 kms away from Agartala. It is built in the middle of a Lake called Rudrasagar with a total area of about 5.35 kms. A perfect blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture it is the only Lake Palace in Eastern India. Half of the Palace is an open-air theatre and the other half on the Western Side is called the Andar Mahal, used by the Royalty..

Sepahijala

This sanctuary located amidst the Charilam Reserve Forest, covers 18 sq kms area and is now a national park. A reservoir of about 150 species of birds, the spectacled monkey is the major attraction of this area and a drive through the dense forest, ride on the toy train and pedal boating in the expansive lake make this a unique tourist spot.

It is thickly vegetated with a variety of forest species. There is also a lake inside which is spread over an area of 3 sq.km. with boating facilities.
Deers are also spotted here. A Zoo, lake, botanical garden, boating facilities are other attractions of this area. A forest Dak Bungalow within the premises of the sanctuary called Abasarika offers fine accomodation. The Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary is also a place of tourist attraction. Bison is a good sight of this place, apart from the other animals in this zoo..

Ujjayanta Palace

Ujjayanta Palace, standing in the heart of the city, is a famous royal house, covering an area of one sq. km.. Styled in Greek sculpture, Ujjayanta Palace was built by Maharaja RadhakishoreIan Manikaya in 1901 at a cost of 10 lakh of rupees. The palace is set with the huge lughole style gardens, adorned by pools and fountains, the superbly tiled floors, curved wooden ceiling and exquisitely crafted doors. The three storeyed mansion has a mixed architecture with three high domes(the centre one being 86' high). Its well laid out gardens have two large tanks on either side and the fountains are laid out in the patterns of the Mughal gardens. The palace is floodlit at night.

At one time the Ujjayanta Palace wasz situated 10 km away from the city. But, as a result of the devastating earthquake in the year 1897, the castle had been destroyed, and latter on rebuilt at the heart of the city. On all sides of the palace complex several temple complex has been developed. The temples are of Lakshmi-Narayan, Uma-Maheshwari, Kali and Jagannath. These are the place which tourist in large numbers..

Pleasure for eyes : It is a magnificient edifice of former Maharajas of Tripura constructed in the heart of Agartala town in about 1.5 sq.km. area in Indo-Roman architectural style. There are also two lakes in front of the Palace. High domes, well laid out gardens and parks, fountains and tanks make it an impressive structure. The palace is set with huge Mughal style gardens, beautified by pools and gardens and tiled floors. Flood lighting and fountains have added to its beauty.


Visitors entering the building on conducted tours run by the State's Tourist Department, should take particular note of the magnificently tiled floors, the ceiling of the Chinese Room crafted by artisans brought from China, and the carved front doors forming an excellent frame for the long drive which once swept up through formal, Mughal gardens.
