Introduction

Camel Festival is often celebrated in the state of Rajasthan. It is celebrated in different parts of the state with full enthusiasm and fervor. The main festival is held in Bikaner and Pushkar. The Camel festival of Bikaner is held every year in the month of January. The occasion is celebrated with lot of folk music, dance accompanied by the antics of Camels. Similarly, Pushkar Camel Fair is held in November with the same festive mood.

Significance of the Camel Festival

Rajasthan mainly constitute desert belt. Before the discovery of modern means of transportation, camels were the main source which was used for travelling in the arid and hot region of the Thar Desert. The survival of the people of this region depended on the 'Ship of the desert' - the Camel. The camels are known for their endurance and strength.

Besides, the army of Bikaner had a valiant camel corps called the Ganga Risala that took active part in both the World Wars. This Camel unit even took part in Indo-Pak wars. Bikaner is the only Camel breeding center in the country. The Camel festival is celebrated as the thanksgiving ceremony to the Ship of desert.

Activities

FIRST DAY

On the first day of the festival a Camel Pageant is held where the camels are decorated with antique jewellery. The camels display various tricks like foot work, dancing, race etc. much to the amusement of the onlookers. The long and lanky camels present wonderful sight when they are decked with bridles, jewels, anklets etc. on their body.

SECOND DAY

On the second day of the festival, the fleet of camels takes part in the long race. The competition becomes fiercer with the best of the camels taking part in the event. Thousands of exited audiences cheer for their favorite camel in the race. Various cultural activities are organized on this occasion. In this festival tea and sweets prepared by camel milk are made available to the visitors interested in enjoying them.
