Facing eastwards to the rising sun, the temple is dedicated to the sun god, Surya. The image of the deity in the inner sanctum is particularly imposing. The group scenes depict royal processions and group dances, reflecting the lavish lifestyle of the Chandela courts. Built in early 11th century, the Chitragupta Temple is situated at the extreme northern end of a row of four temples, extending from south to north. It is the only Khajuraho temple dedicated to Surya, the Sun God and demonstrates an evolution when compared with the Lakshmana and Vishvanatha monuments. The Kandariya Mahadeva stands at the southern extremity of the row, while the ruined Mahadeva shrine and the Jagadambi temple come in between. It is located about 100 yards south-east of the Chopra Tank, which is a deep three-storeyed stepped well built by the Chandelas. It is significant that this temple was constructed in close proximity to the tank. The image of Surya is very impressive and this temple shows signs of a lot of restorative work. The inner sanctum boasts of an impressive image of the presiding deity - the majestic sun-god looming 5 feet high, driving a chariot. The other group scenes depict royal processions, group dances and other scenes of sheer luxury, typical of the Chandela court-life.
