Dances of Mizoram

Usually the dance of Mizoram is akin to traditional tribal dancing pattern. The people of Mizoram generally perform their dances at festive occasion of fest, marriage etc. They perform their dance in group. They express their mood and emotion through these dances. They passionately dance on the beat of traditional drum and gong. Mizoram boosts of at least 10 folk dances like Cheraw, Chai lam, Solakia, Sarlamakai, Khullam, Chawng laizawn and Tlanglam of which Cheraw and Khullam is are the most important.

The Cheraw dance form is one of the most popular dance forms in Mizoram. It is also known as Bamboo dance as bamboo is used in the performance of this dance. The performers of this dance move alternatively in and out of the maize of bamboos. The other participants of dance facing each other on the either side of the bamboos tap them by opening and closing on the rhythmic beats. Individual family performs this dance on the occasion of Buhza Ahi which means bumper harvest.

Khullam dance is known as dance of the guest. Mizo perform this dance form at the festive occasion of Khuangchawi. This is the community dance performed on the beat of gong and drum known as darbu. The notable part of this dance is that it has no lyric to rely upon but the beat of darbu.
