Mizos

Mizoram is the land of many native tribes. The state reflects unison of various tribal groups with their ethnicity still intact. Mizo are the major tribal group of the state. They are also scheduled tribes of India. Lushai tribes were the first to have established any relation with the outsiders so the Mizo were initially termed as Luihai people. The political struggle to have a unique identity gave rise to a separate Union Territory and later on a new state called Mizoram. The motivating factor of the people of Mizoram for a separate state was to establish their identity as Mizo, but not the Mara, the Hmar, the Lushai, the Khiangte, the Ralte, the Paite, and the Pawi. The language of the Mizoram tribe speak is the part of Tibeto-Burman family. The language has close resemblance to Chins from the Chin State of Myanmar and Kukis, Nagas and other tribes.

Mizo is the blanket name for the people of this region who share common cultural and linguistic heritage. The term includes many ethnic groups, distinct population, societies having their own historical identity, cultures and traditions. They are similar in many aspects but yet they are different from each other. Some of the outsiders who call themselves Zomi are also part of the Mizo tribe.
