Tapovan in Nashik is one of the holiest sites in the entire city owing to its mention in the epic Ramayana. According to the Hindu mythologies, Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishu, stayed in this holy land during his exile from Ayodhya. In fact, the major incidents that led to the battle between Rama and Ravana also took place in Tapovana. Lakshaman, the younger brother of Lord Rama is said to have cut Ravana’s sister Surpanakha’s nose here and even Ravana abducted Goddess Sita from the lands of Tapovana. The Tapovan Bhoomi was once a part of the Dandakaranya forest and is the perfect site for a peaceful escape. Even the name Tapovan suggests forest for attaining peace and doing meditation.
