Pandavelni caves, also known as Nashik caves, are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Nashik. They are a large group of 24 caves that were carved around 2,000 years back in the 1st century BCE. These are rock-cut Buddhist caves that were initially temples started out by the Jains which later became a significant Buddhist attraction. Representing the Buddhist Hinayana tradition, these caves reflect an authentic architecture practice of this tradition. These caves are raised on a 100-meter high platform on the Trirashmi Hills. The Jain kings started the construction of these caves in the 1st century BCE and that’s why a number of sculptures of Jain Thirthankaras like Vrishabhdeo, Veer Manibhadraji, and Ambikadevi can still be seen here. These caves served as viharas or monasteries for Buddhists, chaityas with elaborate façade and much more over the years.

Undoubtedly, the best time to visit these caves is during the cool winter months as summer in Nashik can be very hot and humid. Avoid the summer months and plan a trip to the Pandavleni Caves during the winter months from October to March.

Located around 8kms from the center of Nashik, getting to the Panduleni Caves is very easy. It is a popular tourist attraction and you can get a number of buses, taxis, autos etc., taking you to this place. The road to these caves is straight from the city and you can also reach here by personal vehicle.
