This hotel captures the timeless, old-world elegance that Ernest Hemingway himself would have appreciated.The following day begins with a visit to the Giraffe Centre for a close encounter with these gentle giants, followed by a trip to the historic estate of Karen Blixen. Writing under the pen name Isak Dinesen, her memoir Out of Africa remains one of the most poignant tributes to the spirit of the continent. We’ll enjoy a warm, communal lunch filled with good food and shared stories at the hotel, then spend the afternoon exploring the treasures of the National Museum before returning to the comfort of Hemingways.

Dominating the horizon is Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s majestic, ice-capped peak that rises three miles above the savannah, a sight Peter Matthiessen described as a "shimmering point of joy."We will be stationed at Tortilis Camp, a perfect launchpad for visiting local Maasai communities and exploring this remarkably diverse wildlife sanctuary. Our accommodations consist of expansive, thatch-roofed tents tucked beneath the sprawling branches of the ancient Tortilis acacias. From the comfort of your private veranda, you can mirror Isak Dinesen’s experience, observing elephants as they march across the plains with timeless, quiet purpose.

We are headed for the Maasai Mara, the northern heart of the massive Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosystem. This region is arguably the world’s premier sanctuary for large mammals, where over 70 different species roam the endless, sea-like grasslands. From our base at either the magnificent Bateleur Camp or the elegant Governors’ II Moran Camp, we will set out to explore this wildlife-rich paradise.
