Our time in the capital is a deep dive into Kenyan heritage: we’ll explore the vast collections of the National Museum and share a moving, inspirational afternoon at a local Children’s Centre. After a charming encounter at the Giraffe Centre, we’ll enjoy a contemporary lunch at one of Nairobi’s most innovative restaurants. We also visit the historic estate of Karen Blixen (the brilliant Isak Dinesen). Each tent is elevated on a timber platform along the banks of the Ntiakitiak River, offering private veranda views of hippos lounging and elephants bathing in the cool waters below. At altitudes exceeding 7,000 feet, the crisp highland air is truly intoxicating, reminding us of Isak Dinesen’s claim that it "went to my head like wine."We then descend 2,000 feet into the "Lost World" of the crater floor, a 100-square-mile animal kingdom, for a full day of game viewing and an elegant bush picnic. Our exploration continues at Lake Manyara, a shimmering gem fed by highland springs. A favorite of Ernest Hemingway, the lake is a sanctuary for over 300 migratory bird species and a forested stronghold for Africa's most iconic mammals, including the famous tree-climbing (or perhaps more accurately, tree-lounging) lions.
