Baratang Island is an integral part of Andaman and it lies between North and Middle Andaman. It is spread over a 93.7 sq mi area. This island is special for its wild nature, as well as its charming natural beauty.
History
Baratang Island is also famous as Ranchiwalas Island and this is another name with historical significance. At the end of the 19th century, a political disruption happened in Ranchi. Missionaries were using various strategies to convert the people to Christianity. Many local people converted to Christianity to become safer. The British were the ruler and they decided to send the converted Christians to Baratang Island. For those migrants, Farming was the only way to earn a living. Laborers had done a good job and established themselves with a new life. In 1985, A lighthouse had constructed at the eastern entrance to the Andaman strait.

In the winter season, October to February month is the most suitable time to visit this island. The temperature ranges from 20 to 30 degrees centigrade. It is the best time for trekking and participating in water sports activities because the sea water is calm at this time.

The distance between Baratang Island and Port Blair is 101 km by road. Regular bus service facilities are available from port Blair and it will take 2 hrs and 30 minutes approx. Government buses and private AC buses are available for transportation. Apart from these facilities, you can use private jeeps and private cars to reach this destination. You can also pick up the flight from the nearest airport Port Blair. The distance between Port Blair to Baratang by flight is 66 km.
