Swaraj Bhawan

Swaraj Bhawan, Prayagraj was called Anand Bhavan before. The place is the Nehru Family's ancestral home where Indira Gandhi, the only and the former women prime minister was born. The owner of the house in the late 19th century was Moti Lal Nehru. Later, he donated his house in 1930 to the government and made it a headquarter for the Congress Committee. In recent times, the place is known as one of the popular tourist spots in Prayagraj and it has Jawahar Planetarium.

This place is administered by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund. The place has now been turned into a museum for people. There are around forty-two rooms in total. You can here various memorabilia from the past. The most important among all is the Chakra that was what Mahatma Gandhi used.

This place has several phonographs of the time during freedom struggle along with some personal things of the Nehru family. There are some underground rooms even which make this place so special and unique. These rooms were the ones where the Congress meeting took place.

History

Swaraj Bhawan, Prayagraj is a historical site that was made on the land of twenty acres and the owner was Shaikh Fayyaz Ali. The stone foundation of this place was in the year 1868. The completion of the construction of this building was over in the year 1871. Swaraj Bhawan was known as Anand Bhawan before and before it was Anand Bhawan it was known as Mahmud Manzil. The construction was done for Syed Ahmad Khan, a Muslim leader, and an educationist. His son’s name was Mahmud Manzil and that why it was so-called at that time.

Later, this building became the house of the Justice of Allahabad Court, Syed Muhmad. In 1873 after Shaikh Fayyaz Ali died, the property was under the Allahabad court and its administration.

Later in 1888, the government sold the place to Rai Bahadur Permanand Pathak, the judge of Saharanpur. After that, the mansion went to the dilapidation of the state and was left with no human for a long time because of the results. Then in 1900, the mansion was sold to Motilal Nehru and was named Anand Bhawan by him.
