The Red Sand Dunes of Phan Thiet, located near the coastal town of Mui Ne, are one of the most popular and visually striking natural attractions in southern Vietnam. Also known as “Doi Cat Bay,” these dunes are famous for their unique reddish-orange hue, sculpted over time by wind into soft, rolling hills. The Red Sand Dunes offer a captivating desert-like experience right beside the sea, drawing visitors for photography, sand sliding, and sunset viewing.
Unlike the larger White Sand Dunes further inland, the Red Sand Dunes are smaller and more accessible, making them ideal for a quick visit, especially during the early morning or late afternoon. They represent a beautiful natural contrast to the blue waters of the nearby South China Sea, with panoramic views that change constantly due to shifting sands.
The Red Sand Dunes are located about 3 kilometers northeast of Mui Ne Town and roughly 25 kilometers from the center of Phan Thiet City.
- By Taxi or Motorbike: Easily accessible via Huynh Thuc Khang Street from Mui Ne. It’s about a 10-minute drive.

- Walking or Bicycling: For the adventurous, it's possible to walk or cycle from Mui Ne Beach as the route is scenic and relatively flat.
Phan Thiet has a tropical savanna climate and is known as one of the driest regions in Vietnam. This weather makes the dunes a year-round attraction.
- Best Time to Visit: November to April is ideal due to the dry, sunny weather.
- Temperature: Average temperatures range between 25°C and 32°C.
- Rainy Season: May to October sees occasional rain, but most days are still suitable for visiting the dunes.

The Red Sand Dunes have been formed over centuries through the natural process of wind erosion and sedimentation. Their color comes from iron-rich minerals within the sand, which gives them a distinct reddish-orange tint.
While not historically “man-made,” the dunes have become part of the local tourism culture in Mui Ne. They offer insight into Vietnam’s diverse natural landscapes, from tropical forests and rice paddies to desert-like terrain.
