Nalknad Palace is a historical palace and a protected monument in the village of Yavakapadi in Coorg. This palace was the last refuge of the King Chikka Veerarajendra. This palace has an interesting history behind it. When the British powers invaded Coorg and the palace, King Chikka Veerarajendra fled from the place and took refuge in this palace. In order to prevent major losses, he surrendered to the British Army and thrown to Benaras.
It Is Known For:-
1) Unlike other palaces that depict the lavishness, Nalknad Palace appears like a regular house of the ancient times. However, entering the premises let a person know about its historical connections.
2) The entire palace is bedecked with the different paintings of the then times. There are some semi-ruined sculptures on all sides of this palace.
3) The interiors (now restored) narrate the artwork of the skilled craftsmen. The different miniature paintings of birds and culture of the region can be seen in this palace.
4) This palace is renowned for its circumjacent. It has a scenic backdrop of the Tadiandamol Peak and has arresting gardens on both sides of the entrance gate.
5) The gardens are said to be the mandapa where the King Doddaveerarajendra and Queen Mahadeviamma took the vows of the wedding.
Best Time To Visit:-
Nalknad Palace is a protected monument and can be visited during any time of the year. It is a place that is frequented by many visitors, especially during the winter and monsoons.
No entry fee is charged from visitors and photography isn’t prohibited.
Watch Out!
Visitors should watch out for the right season before visiting. One should avoid visiting this place when the temperatures are high, especially during the daytime.
Reaching There:-
Coorg city has a well-established connection to the roadways, railways, and airways and thus, a visitor can reach the city via any of the three means mentioned above. Commuting within the city is feasible when done by hiring the service of the local taxis and autos. The buses do not ply on the route of Nalknad Palace.
