Located in a small town in Karnataka, Kittur Fort and Palace is a prominent tourist site in Belgaum. This historical monument used to be the authoritarian seat for Queen Chennamma. She was the mighty queen that ruled over the fort and the region for a very long period of time. The walls of Kittur Fort have heard and seen the struggles and battles for freedom against the British power. It is said that Kittur Palace was the palace from where the first spark of the freedom movement in Belgaum was initiated.
It Is Known For:-
1) Kittur Fort and Palace was built under the reign of the 5th ruler of the Gowda Dynasty, Allappa Gowda Sardesai. He also built a palace within the fort premises as his residence
2) Queen Chennamma, the mighty ruler of this fort, carried out an armed rebellion against the British for their unwanted tax collection atrocities
3) Fighting against the British, she lost the bout and was captured by British soldiers
4) The entire fort was renovated from different parts and that is still visible clearly
5) They installed a uniform system of the canals for supplying the water
6) Also, the turrets were erected in the backyard of the fort but were devastated due to unknown reasons
7) It had a special room for watching the Pole Star and was installed with a telescope for observing the celestial events
