Vashisht Temple, Manali Overview

Himachal is always admired for its beautiful lush valleys and unmatched quality springs. And, one of them is the hot spring of Vashisht temple. Bathing in such holy hot spring water may or may not have any other benefits but it’s definitely effective for beating the cold of Manali. Squeeze the heat of this pristine and stunning water, lies in the virgin valleys of Manali and embraced by the gorgeous River Beas, you should visit the place.

 

Visitor Information:

 

• Vashisht temple s popularly visited to watch the hot water springs, doing photography and enjoying the scenic views

• No entry fee is required to enter the temple

• It is open from 7 AM – 10 PM every day (closed between 1 PM and 2 PM)

• You will need at least half an hour for visiting the temple

 

Traveler Tips:

 

• Careful about pickpockets

• Bargain before you buy anything here

• Keep an extra set of clothes with you as you will probably get wet here!

• Do not carry plastics with you

 

Things to do:

 

• Have a small bath in the holy warm spring water. It will help your nerves to calm down.

• Do a trekking tour through the green lush valleys.

• Visit the Hadimba temple to offer prayers to goddess Hadimba, the wife of Bhim of the Pandavas.

• Spend some cool time in the virgin atmosphere of Manu temple.

History:

 

Positioned only 3.5 km away from the bus stand of Manali, the Vashisht Temple, Manali is dedicated to rishi Vashisht, who was the kula guru of the four sons of Dasharatha – Ram, Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughna. He was one major personality of the seven ages of Hindus. The village Vashisht is named after him when he started his new life here after the death of his son.

 

Architecture:

 

The temple is about 4000 years old. Inside the temple, you can spot a black stone that is having the image of sage Vashisht wearing a dhoti. The entire temple is adorned with several beautiful wood carvings. It gets a traditional feel with the antique figures and paintings decorated on the walls.

 

Best Time to Visit:

 

Oh! Come on! I do not need to tell which time is best to have a bath in the hot spring water! Gurgling water is always enjoyable. But yah, in winter the surrounding becomes a bit chilling… but it’s wonderful always.

 

How to Reach?

 

By train – Jogindernagar railway station is closest to Manali which is connected with many other major cities in India. From there hire any local mode of transport to reach the Vashisht Temple, Manali.

By air – Bhuntar airport is closest to Manali which lies 10 km away from the city. From there you can hire a cab or ride on a local bus to reach the temple.

By road – Himachal Pradesh state bus service is the best way to reach Manali at reasonable cost. There are several private bus services too. You can also self-drive a car to reach here by NH.

• There is a wide range of legends linked with the Vashisht temple and its hot spring.

• The Vashisht village is popular for having multiple sulphuric hot springs.

• According to one of such legends, lord Lakshman has created this spring with his arrow for Rishi Vashisht so that he does not require to go far for having a regular bath

• Another popular legend says that Rishi Vashisht tried to commit suicide in the River of Beas after hearing the news of his son’s death by sage Vishwamitra but the river saved him. He then started living here in the village of Vashisht.

• The hot spring of the Vashisht temple is one of the major sources of freshwater in the city.

• The tourism department of Manali has set up distinct tanks especially for female tourists.

• The temperature of the hot spring water lies between 40 – 50 °C.

• The mythological origin of the spring demands for having healing powers in the hot spring water. It is said the spring water is able to cure various skin diseases and infections.

• Isolated bathrooms are there for males and females.

    I am happy with the overall package provided by Miss Shalu. All are very much helpful in my case. Food as well as the room provided in MANALI is clean. The person in lodge are helpful. Cab drivers are a little bit arrogant but after concerning with the Miss Shalu and Mr Raj they provide service very well.
