History
Sinhagad Fort, Sinhagad was popularly known as kondhana after the name of a monk Kaundinya. The monument has kondeshwar temple with sculptures that have been built for more than 1000 years ago. The fort was initially seized by Muhammad bin Tughlaq from Koli kings and later it was conquered by Marathas. The fort was attacked by Mughals several times but they gain control only after the death of Shivaji.
The famous battle of Sinhagad Fort on which Hindi movie has been made features General Tanaji Malusare of Maratha Empire who had recaptured the fort in 1670 AD. During the battle, Tanaji lost his life but his brother conquered the fort now it is known as Sinhagad Fort. A statue in memory of Tanaji Malusare has been built on the top of the fort. The ancient stone stairways of this fort mark its presence even today.
