Sinhagad Fort is an ancient fortress and famous for its historical significance and architecture. It is located in the Sahyadri Mountains and is about 35 km from Pune. The Sinhagad Fort means Lion\'s Fort and was built strategically to provide steep slopes that give it natural protection and located in Sahyadri Mountains. The Sinhagad Fort was also previously known as Kondhana. The fort was captured by the British in the year 1818 AD and it took 3 months for them to conquer such fort. The fortress also displays samadhi of Tanaji Malsure along with the tomb of Shivaji's son, Rajaram.

The fort opens from 6:00 am to 6: 00 pm in the evening and tourists need to get down by the evening. There is no entry fee to visit the fort but there is a parking fee of Rs.20 for parking two-wheeler and Rs. 50 for four-wheeler vehicles. 4 hours are sufficient to explore the fort to its full glory. Tourists are advised to carry trekking shoes while climbing. The place is ideal for photographers and nature lovers.

History

 

Sinhagad Fort, Sinhagad was popularly known as kondhana after the name of a monk Kaundinya. The monument has kondeshwar temple with sculptures that have been built for more than 1000 years ago. The fort was initially seized by Muhammad bin Tughlaq from Koli kings and later it was conquered by Marathas. The fort was attacked by Mughals several times but they gain control only after the death of Shivaji.

The famous battle of Sinhagad Fort on which Hindi movie has been made features General Tanaji Malusare of Maratha Empire who had recaptured the fort in 1670 AD. During the battle, Tanaji lost his life but his brother conquered the fort now it is known as Sinhagad Fort. A statue in memory of Tanaji Malusare has been built on the top of the fort. The ancient stone stairways of this fort mark its presence even today.

The monument is popular for its architecture and natural beauty surrounded by the fort. The fort is built on a plateau of great Sahyadri Mountains which is above 1300 meters above sea level.
