Tunga Fort is a well-known hill fort that lies in the district of Pune in Maharashtra. The other name for this fort is 'Kathingad'. The word 'Kathin' means difficult and it is said that reaching this fort was a challenging task for all due to its narrow pathways. This architectural marvel was built by the Muslim ruler, Adil Shahi in the 16th century but was captured by the great Maratha warrior, Chhatrapati Shivaji. Tunga Fort served as a watchtower to keep an eye on the movements that were clearly visible on the outskirts of the nearby region of Maval.
It Is Known For:-
1) The hill fort of Kathingad is known for its architecture. Though it stands in a semi-ruined position, the conical peak of the fort can be seen clearly from a great distance.
2) It stands in the amalgam of the Hindu-Islamic style of architecture. Its dome (now devastated) was built in the Hindu style and the arches on the door were beautifully carved in the Islamic style.
3) This fort, at present, is surrounded by the foothills of Sahyadri and has different places like the Tungi Devi Temple on its top, the cannons of Tung, a secret hideaway, and a water reservoir.
4) This place is seen as a picture-perfect destination for enjoying a nice trek for a couple of hours. It is a prominent reason for trekkers to visit this place extensively.

Excluding the extreme summers and monsoons, every season of the year is considered as apt for paying a visit to this hill fort. It is recommended that only the medically fit individuals should take up the activity of trekking. Taking up a trip to this place during winters is simply beyond description.
The villages near the fort of Kathingad are well-connected via the major highway that passes through it. The local buses and taxis are the best mode for reaching the fort conveniently.
