Sringeri Sharada Peetham

Sringeri Sharada Peetham is a well-known pilgrimage destination in Chikmagalur. It is a matha that was established in the 8th century by Adi Shankara on the banks of Tunga River. The main purpose of establishing this place was to revive the Upanishads in Smartha Tradition. It is said that taking the dip in the holy waters of the River Tungabhadra washes away all sins and a devotee gets the benefit equivalent of taking the dip in the Holy Ganges.

Sringeri Sharada Peetham is known for its divinity. According to the history, Adi Shankara was captivated by the sight of a cobra rearing up and spreading its hood for providing shelter to a frog.
