Mamallapuram Lighthouse, Mahabalipuram

Mamallapuram Lighthouse is a famous tourist attraction in Mahabalipuram. It is a modern masonry tower that was constructed along the structure built by the Pallava dynasty in Tamil Nadu. It was commissioned because Mamallapuram served as one of the busy ports in South India. Today, this light house is a monument of interest and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

1) Mamallapuram lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in India that was constructed in the year 1887 during the British rule in India. It has a height of 85 feet
2) This lighthouse was used to guide the ships during the dark hours of night when they had to leave or arrive at the port
3) This lighthouse was operational for many years but was closed in 2001 due to the continuous threats from LTTE, an inactive group of extremists at present
4) It is located close to Mahishamardini Cave that is another major site of interest in the region

Mamallapuram Lighthouse attracts tourists on a large scale. There is no specific season for paying a casual visit to this place. It can be visited during any time of the year but, the best time is considered as between October-February. The temperatures remain cool that makes it convenient to visit this site.
