History:

The history of the Laxminarayan Temple, Orchha states that the pretty temple was built by Vir Singh long back in the year 1622. Because of the inadequate maintenance, the condition of the temple soon worsened. Later in 1793, the temple was reconstructed by Prithvi Singh and was then dedicated to the Goddess of wealth, Laxmi. Within the chambors of the temple, one must see the arrangements that Vir Singh made for offering sacrifices for Goddess Laxmi.

Architecture:

The architecture of this beautiful temple is quite pretty. The temple in Orchha is erected keeping a striking blend of fort as well as temple architecture. The temple is built with the help of lime mortar and bricks. One can have a look at the frescos and paintings that are there within the walls of the temple. These frescos and paintings are a perfect mixture of Mughul and Bundel forms of art. While the bright and lively colours of frescos are still retained, they display certain social and secular themes. Moreover, the carvings displayed within the temple are in a geometrical pattern and one can take pleasures of the glimpses from the life of Lord Krishna, which is adorned with flowers and animals.

How to Reach:

One can reach Orchha by taking a flight to Gwalior Airport from where it is 108 kms away. Or else, one can also take flight to Khajuraho Airport (HJR), Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, which happens to be 140 kms away. By train, the nearest railway station is Barwa Sagar, which 8 kms away from Orchha or Jhansi Junction (JHS), Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, which is 14 km away from the destination. Orchha doesn’t have its own bus stand and the nearest option one can get down at is Jhansi that is 14 kms away.

Interesting Facts and Trivia About:

One of the interesting facts about the Laxminarayan Temple, Orchha is that the temple is dedicated to Goddess Laxmi, but no one can find any idol of the goddess within the temple. One can only find the statues of Ganesh at the entry of the temple and in one of the corners, there are some stone idols of Krishna and Rukmini that were erected some time back only.
